Pick Your Stones
SCRIPTURE READING: 1 Samuel 17: 1-53
FOCUS VERSE: “Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.” (1 Samuel 17: 45)
In our Focal Scripture, David announced to Goliath that he came in the name of the Lord. Notice that in verse 40 of our Scripture Reading, David picked five smooth stones, took his sling and put all in his bag. So the David that came against Goliath in the name of the Lord, was not empty handed, or unprepared. David had a sling and stones, but he came in the name of the Lord. He came prepared, but he came in the name of the Lord.
Friend, pick your ‘sling’ and your ‘stones’, but be mindful to come in the name of the Lord. Be prepared, but be intentional to come in the name of the Lord. Develop the capacity you need to conquer your battles, but come in the name of the Lord. Build your spiritual and physical muscles to be able to fight and win, but come in the name of the Lord. Pick up your confidence, faith, focus, capacity, etc., but come in the name of the Lord.
To come in the name of the Lord does not mean to show up unprepared or empty-handed. To come in the name of the Lord does not mean to come without your ‘sling’ and your ‘stones’. To come in the name of the Lord is not an endorsement of laziness and lack of capacity. To come in the name of the Lord does not invalidate the reality of your roles in your victory.
David came in the name of the Lord, but he also came with his sling and five stones. In the end, the name of the Lord worked with his sling and stone and brought down Goliath. What he came with in his hands, was used by the Lord to make a name for Himself. As you pick your stones, God will use them to make a name for Himself through your life. God will use your capacity and preparation to bring you victory in all battles.
Don’t be counted amongst them that are empty handed and without capacity. Pick your stones, but come in the name of the Lord.
Proverbs 21: 31 (GNB) says: “You can get horses ready for battle, but it is the LORD who gives victory.”
DECLARATION: I pick my stones; I show up with capacity, but my victory is in the name of the Lord, in Jesus’ name!
