The Early Years
The history of Toyota starts in 1933 within the loom-making company, Toyoda Automatic Loom Works. Kiichiro Toyoda, son of the founder, ventured into automobiles after extensive research and encouragement from the Japanese government, which was keen on domestic vehicle production due to the war with China
The Birth of a Car Manufacturer
In 1934, the division produced its first Type A Engine, used in the first Model A1 passenger car in May 1935 and the G1 truck in August 1935. The production of the Model AA passenger car started in 1936, marking Toyota’s official entry into the automobile manufacturing industry
A Name Change
In 1937, Toyota Motor Co. was established as an independent company. The name ‘Toyota’ was chosen over ‘Toyoda’ because it has 8 strokes in katakana, considered a lucky number in East Asian culture World War II and Beyond.
During World War II, Toyota dedicated itself to truck production for the Imperial Japanese Army. Post-war, Toyota faced severe shortages but persevered and continued to innovate.
Global Expansion
Toyota’s growth in the postwar era was phenomenal. It quickly became a significant player in the global market, adapting to various international demands and consumer preferences.
Today’s Toyota
Now, Toyota is the largest automobile manufacturer in the world, producing about 10 million vehicles per year. It remains a leader in hybrid technology and is renowned for its Toyota Production System (TPS), which revolutionized manufacturing processes worldwide.
